BIRMINGHAM’S ACTIVE TRAVEL FUND

Birmingham City Council is hoping to transform the city centre by reducing traffic and pollution and creating more public spaces.

Last year, several temporary changes were introduced across different parts of the city centre to reduce the volume of through traffic and the dominance of vehicles on minor roads, making it safer for people to walk and cycle.

This included some changes in and around the Southside District area, including:

  • Restrictions on east-west movements from Bristol Street, with no left turns (except for cyclists) onto Essex Street, Bromsgrove Street or Wrentham Street

  • Weekend closures of Hurst Street to allow local venues to use the space for additional tables and chairs

The council is now planning to improve and build on these measures through the Active Travel Fund, extending the benefits across a wider area to help the city centre recover from the impact of COVID-19.

To help steer the next set of proposals, Birmingham City Council wants to hear your comments on how these measures have worked so far, and what else could be done. Questions include:

  • What do you think about the temporary changes made last year?

  • What could further improve them or fix any current issues?

  • Where else in the area would benefit from improvements?

  • What would make the area better and encourage you to visit, walk or cycle more?

Please visit this site before Friday 16th April to log your comments and help improve our district:
