Birmingham Light Festival will brighten up the dark winter nights

From 6pm–10pm on 19–22 Feb 2025, a series of city centre locations will be transformed into a free, spectacular gallery of illuminated artworks for all to enjoy and explore.

Southside District is a partner and is hosting both temporary and legacy pieces as part of the inaugural festival.

HIPPODROME SQUARE- PEACE POEM

Peace Poem was created to commemorate the 100 years since the first day of peace after WWI. The large-scale mobile artwork illuminates the beautiful words of acclaimed poet Robert Montgomery.

Starting in the pandemic, it has been seen by thousands of people across the UK. Peace Poem has been engaging communities in discussions about the fragile nature of peace, the strength of the communities and individuals who work to sustain it. Now more than ever, the world needs a shining beacon of peace.

Throughout the evening, the poem will be animated by beautiful, illuminated butterflies. In many cultures across the world, butterflies are often seen as symbols of change, rebirth and hope.

Butterflies of Birmingham times:
18:30-19:00

Due to the nature of performing outdoors in winter, these timings are subject to change on the day. Our festival volunteers will be able to advise you of any updates to timings.

THORP STREET - ROOF OF STARS

The Roof of Stars on Thorp Street, suspended above Birmingham Hippodrome’s Stage Door will transform the street into a safer, vibrant and more welcoming space which will enhance the area.

Inspired by the stars who pass through the Hippodrome’s Stage Door this innovative light installation features an array of star themed animations, improves accessibility, celebrates creativity and prioritises sustainability. The piece will create a distinctive environment with unique effects and a focal point beneath the stars that strengthens Southside’s position as a cornerstone of Birmingham’s cultural scene with Birmingham Hippodrome at its heart.
