Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla
Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th May 2023
On Saturday 6th May, His Majesty King Charles III will become the 40th monarch to be crowned King at Westminster Abbey. The nation will come together to celebrate with a series of community events across the entire Kingdom. As you would expect, Birmingham will come together for a weekend of celebration to commemorate this momentous national occasion.
A partnership of sponsors and supporters including, Birmingham City Council (our principal partner), The Lord Mayors Parlour, Westside Bid and Colmore Bid have joined together to support the event to commemorate the Coronation celebrations with a number of activities held over the weekend in Centenary Square, Birmingham.
Centenary Square will become transformed with a sea of Union Jacks and will include an outdoor stage playing host to numerous LIVE entertainers over the course of the weekend that will reflect the rich diversity of our city and the wider West Midlands. We will have children’s fun fair rides for the family, food concessions, street entertainment, picnic benches and a big screen.
The event will officially open on Saturday 6th May at 11am where we will be broadcasting the national broadcast of the Coronation itself. From 2pm until 9pm our live events will begin with celebratory choirs, acoustic musicians, dance troupes, tribute artists, bands and more.
On Sunday 7th May, the event will open from 1pm with more live entertainment until 7pm when we will screen the Coronation Concert Live.
Commenting on the forthcoming Coronation Celebrations in the city, Birmingham City Council leader, Cllr Ian Ward said "The King's Coronation will be a truly historic occasion and a fantastic opportunity for the people and communities of Birmingham and the wider region to come together and celebrate. Throughout the weekend, we will mark this once in a generation event in true Birmingham style and I'm sure the Centenary Square celebrations will prove to be a hit."
Event organiser, Lawrence Barton said “Following the glorious and historic reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II, we are delighted to deliver a weekend of free family entertainment in the heart of Birmingham City in Centenary Square on Saturday the 6th and Sunday 7th May;- to celebrate the coronation of their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. We hope that people from across the region will come to the City and enjoy this momentous occasion”
