SOUTHSIDE DISTRICT BID WINS THIRD TERM WITH RECORD TURNOUT
Southside District BID is proud to announce that it has won a third term following a record turnout and a 94% approval rate, enabling it to continue to operate as a Business Improvement District for the area.
Established in 2011, Southside BID has worked tirelessly to improve this vibrant and unique part of Birmingham, making it a safer and more welcoming destination, increasing visibility through marketing and events and, crucially, supporting the broad range of businesses that call Southside home.
The BID team comprises of the board, which includes representatives from businesses throughout the area, plus the cleaning and street warden teams who patrol the area daily, ensuring the area remains safe and clean.
Throughout the numerous challenges of 2020, the BID has continued to support the wide range of businesses it represents, lobbying both local and central government for additional financial support for those impacted by the pandemic. The BID also works closely with Birmingham City Council to gain support for schemes such as StrEATery, which saw the whole of Hurst Street pedestrianised over six weekends in the summer, enabling venues to increase capacity and serve more visitors.
The incredibly successful Safe Space initiative was also implemented by the BID alongside the St John Ambulance service, offering help and support to people who need it every Friday to Sunday, from midnight until 5am.
Southside BID manager, Julia Robinson, said: “The whole of the BID team has worked incredibly hard over the last two terms to give our businesses a voice and make the area safer, cleaner and more attractive to visitors than ever before.
“We’re so proud to have a 94% approval rate, with a 46% turnout from voters, giving us a mandate to continue our efforts over the next five years. The last six months have undoubtedly thrown up some of the biggest challenges that many businesses have ever faced, and Southside BID has been there throughout to support our members. This connectivity is one of the most important aspects of the BID – we ensure that our businesses have a seat at the table when it comes to lobbying for support, whether that be local or national government, the media and wider stakeholders.
“Now that we have been re-elected, we look forward to continue supporting our wonderfully diverse community. The redevelopment of Hippodrome Square will be a focal point for the area, where we hope to create a fantastic events space for all to use. Southside will also be a key destination when the Commonwealth Games 2022 arrive in the city, bringing even more visitors into our district.
“We would like to thank everyone who voted for BID 3 and look forward to ensuring that Southside District remains the cultural heart of the city.”
